{"id":14368,"date":"2022-10-25T15:33:52","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T13:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theologie.whp.uzh.ch\/apps\/gpi\/?p=14368"},"modified":"2022-10-25T15:33:52","modified_gmt":"2022-10-25T13:33:52","slug":"john-831-36-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theologie.uzh.ch\/apps\/gpi\/john-831-36-2\/","title":{"rendered":"John 8:31-36"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reformation Sunday | October 30, 2022 | John 8:31-36 | Judson F Merrell |<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><sup>31<\/sup><\/em><em> Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, &#8222;If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<sup>32<\/sup> and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<sup>33<\/sup> They answered him, &#8222;We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, &#8218;You will be made free&#8216;?&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<sup>34<\/sup> Jesus answered them, &#8222;Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<sup>35<\/sup> The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<sup>36<\/sup> So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0(Joh 8:31-36 NRSV)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brothers and sisters in Christ, grace and peace to you from God the Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this Reformation Sunday the church again celebrates the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, and all the reformers who fought for the confessional movement within the church.\u00a0 History has taught us that schisms involving religion have always been a part of the world, and will continue to be.\u00a0 What we celebrate today is a failure, because rather than actually reforming the church and bringing people together the church was broken.\u00a0 Even today Lutheranism, a name hated by Luther himself, is not unified.\u00a0 We continue to find ways to divide, rather than finding ways to unify as the body of Christ.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t only true of Lutherans, as other denominations in our midst have split and continue to do so today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus lived in the midst of a religious schism.\u00a0 Some Jews believed in him, some did not.\u00a0 Some had believed briefly, and then fell away.\u00a0 Some hated Jesus and wanted to kill him.\u00a0 In the midst of all that, Jesus looked at those Jews who had believed in him and said \u201cIf you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Think about that.\u00a0 In the midst of a divided people, that is a bold statement.\u00a0 It\u2019s especially bold given not only the religious divisions of the day, but also the social and political divisions.\u00a0 For Jesus and for the Jews, they lived in an occupied land.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 words stir their thoughts about what a Rome-free Israel could look like.\u00a0 His words stir them to imagine a time when they could live unified in their religion.\u00a0 No longer would they be subject to Caesar or oppressed by Rome.\u00a0 They yearned to be free from the occupation, to have their own kingdom and their own king again.\u00a0 Not just a puppet of the government, but their own government they could hold accountable.\u00a0 This is what Jesus offers them. \u00a0As he tells them \u201cIf you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples\u201d, he does so with an extra proposition: \u201cyou will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.&#8220;\u00a0 Jesus offers the Jews a chance for unity, a chance for freedom, and a chance to be a disciple in a kingdom that is not of this world. \u00a0That in and of itself is remarkable, but it is a statement that automatically brings about some healthy skepticism among the Jews.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus\u2019 statement is one that conflicts with the very thoughts of how we live in this world.\u00a0 Luther\u2019s comment on this text is that this statement \u201cappears laughable to reason and wrong to the world, and yet it is true.\u201d<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/BEB49121-A0D9-43B8-B26E-85600F2B4469#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a>\u00a0 We think of the here and now.\u00a0 We think of worldly kingdoms and our day to day experiences of life.\u00a0 It is no wonder the Jews answer Jesus &#8222;We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, &#8218;You will be made free&#8216;?&#8220;\u00a0 Their experience in life is being under Roman rule.\u00a0 It is paying taxes to Caesar.\u00a0 It is living under a puppet king.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Jesus is offering them an experience of a lifetime, an eternal lifetime that is different than anything they know.\u00a0 All they have to do is continue in his word.\u00a0 A quick glance at the history of the church shows that is a task that not everyone is willing to commit too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loyalty is hard.\u00a0 Loyalty demands priority.\u00a0 Loyalty demands hard work.\u00a0 If we want a paycheck, we have to keep working at our respectable jobs.\u00a0 We have to come in on time and not leave before our work is done.\u00a0 Students must arrive at school on time and complete all their assignments or they will not get the grades needed to advance.\u00a0 The church cannot exist without faithful believers who take an active role in the ministry of the congregation.\u00a0 God demands our loyalty to him, we are called to be faithful when we are baptized.\u00a0 In turn, God is faithful to us.\u00a0 He offers us freedom within a kingdom that is not of this world.\u00a0 He offers us a look at what truth really is\u2026and it isn\u2019t division, but unity.\u00a0 Not theological arguments or social\/political arguments, but the Word of God.\u00a0 It is not giving up because the work is too hard, but instead abiding in the Word on a constant basis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be a disciple is to remain loyal to God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 It is to endure in this life, but also to suffer and bear what we must, so that the Gospel may be spread.\u00a0 And this is what leads to freedom.\u00a0 Not freedom from suffering, but freedom from sin.\u00a0 For our Lord went to the cross and rose on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> day so that we all will one day taste that freedom from sin and death and bondage.\u00a0 On this Reformation Sunday we are reminded to continue in the quest for freedom.\u00a0 Religious schisms will certainly be a part of that.\u00a0 Division will seem as though it is winning over unity.\u00a0 Our understanding of the world may seem to make more sense than the Word.\u00a0 And yet we are called to abide in the Word, to strengthen our faith constantly, so that our journey is one of discipleship and freedom.\u00a0 It is a journey that does not lead to earthly riches, but instead to truth and freedom in the kingdom that is not of this world.\u00a0 Jesus said &#8222;If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; <sup>32<\/sup> and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.&#8220;\u00a0 Our task is at hand, and we have been called.\u00a0 So let us go into world continuing in the Word, striving to be the very disciples that our Lord has called us to be.\u00a0 In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Amen.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rev.
