Dr. Ryan Mills |<\/h3>\n<p><em><sup>1<\/sup><\/em><em>Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.\u00a0<sup>2<\/sup>So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, \u201cThey have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.\u201d\u00a0<sup>3<\/sup>Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb.\u00a0<sup>4<\/sup>The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.\u00a0<sup>5<\/sup>He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in.\u00a0<sup>6<\/sup>Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there,\u00a0<sup>7<\/sup>and the cloth that had been on Jesus\u2019 head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.\u00a0<sup>8<\/sup>Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;\u00a0<sup>9<\/sup>for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.\u00a0<sup>10<\/sup>Then the disciples returned to their homes.<\/p>\n<p><sup>11<\/sup>But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb;\u00a0<sup>12<\/sup>and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet.\u00a0<sup>13<\/sup>They said to her, \u201cWoman, why are you weeping?\u201d She said to them, \u201cThey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.\u201d\u00a0<sup>14<\/sup>When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.\u00a0<sup>15<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cWoman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?\u201d Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, \u201cSir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.\u201d\u00a0<sup>16<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cMary!\u201d She turned and said to him in Hebrew, \u201cRabbouni!\u201d (which means Teacher).\u00a0<sup>17<\/sup>Jesus said to her, \u201cDo not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, \u2018I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.\u2019\u2006\u201d\u00a0<sup>18<\/sup>Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, \u201cI have seen the Lord\u201d; and she told them that he had said these things to her (John 20:1-18, NRSV). <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>In the Name of the Father, and of the Son +, and of the Holy Spirit. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the night.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThis is the night,\u201d we\u2019ve heard sung.\u00a0 \u201cThis is the night when in ancient times God delivered the children of Israel and led them dry-footed through the Red sea.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThis is the night in which all who believe in Christ are rescued from evil and the gloom of sin, and renewed in grace and holiness by his rising brightness.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThis is the night, where, breaking the chains of death, Christ arises from death and hell in triumph,\u201d Christ who has beaten every enemy, Christ who has destroyed your death, This is the night when Christ now lives and reigns forever, so that you and I will live with him forever too.<\/p>\n<p>You have been the angels tonight who\u2019ve told us the old, old stories, who&#8217;ve announced to us the Good News.\u00a0 The good news of our God who created us in his image to live with him forever.\u00a0 Of our God who rescued his children who were worked-to-death slaves and were not allowed worship him by an evil King.\u00a0 Of our God who is the only one we may worship, who is with Shadrack, Meeshack and Abednego and even us in the fieriest furnace, who is with us always, even to the end of the age.<\/p>\n<p>This is the night, when Mary Magdalene went to the tomb in darkness, before it was daylight, to do the loving, respectful thing and tend to the body of her Lord.\u00a0 But what did she find when she got there?\u00a0 What insult added to injury?\u00a0 The stone, that big giant gravestone, had been rolled away!<\/p>\n<p>Three days earlier Mary had seen them arrest Jesus, and mock him and beat him.\u00a0 She&#8217;d been there when they nailed him to the Cross, she waited with him during those long hours when darkness covered the earth, she was there when he breathed his last, she stood weeping when they took him down, she had seen them lay him in the tomb and seal it shut.\u00a0 But now the tomb was open, with nothing and no one inside of it.<\/p>\n<p>And so Mary ran&#8211;what would you do if you found an emptied, messed with tomb?&#8211;she ran, and came to the disciples\u2014the same disciples who had abandoned Jesus, and denied him, and left him alone to die on the Cross\u2014she came and told them, \u201cThey have taken the Lord away, and we don\u2019t know where they\u2019ve laid him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now the disciples ran tonight, they ran together to see this disaster, faster and faster.\u00a0 And when they arrived, what did they see, but the grave clothes lying there, neatly folded up, rolled up, the tokens of death put away as useless and powerless. Save the receipt and take them back because these are not needed anymore&#8211;there was nothing to see there except for an empty grave, just as he had promised.<\/p>\n<p>But Mary stood weeping and weeping outside the tomb, she was not leaving, she was staying.\u00a0 Mary loved him, she wasn\u2019t leaving him even if he wasn&#8217;t there, there\u2019s a beauty to faith that doesn\u2019t give up, that doesn\u2019t give in, that holds on to God even when everything has fallen apart, she stands right there and won\u2019t leave and just weeps. And as she looks in, there: two angels dressed in white, one at the head and one at the foot of where Jesus\u2019 body had been.\u00a0 \u201cWoman, why are you weeping,\u201d the angels ask? God enters into your tears gently tonight, like a parent comforts a child, \u201cTell me, why are you crying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as Mary turns to wipe her eyes, as she turns, right there in front of her is Jesus.\u00a0 \u201cWoman, why are you weeping,\u201d he echoes gently?\u00a0 \u201cWhom are you looking for?\u201d\u00a0 In her tears, in her grief, in the darkness, Mary assumes he\u2019s the gardener!\u00a0 Here is the Risen Jesus Christ, with defeated death behind him, who has risen triumphantly and punctured death, killed it, triumphed over it, who has emptied your grave and my grave tonight and ushered in light and life eternal\u2026 and Mary thinks he\u2019s the lawnmower guy.\u00a0 Christ is always hidden from us, he looks too ordinary, too everyday, until he shows himself.\u00a0 And so he does, in the greatest, shortest sermon ever:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cMary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary,\u201d Christ knows his own, he knows those who belong to him, he knows you, he knows your name, and he\u2019s not afraid to use it!\u00a0 Your name that he called out the day you were baptized, your name he had in mind as he died for you and for the world on the Cross, your name that he will speak as one day he calls you out of death, as he calls you out of <u>your<\/u>grave into eternal life forever with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRabbi, Teacher,\u201d Mary cries out, and then she holds onto him.\u00a0 This is no ghost, this is no figment of anybody\u2019s imagination, this is the flesh and blood Jesus risen and alive forever, his body is raised up warm and healed and new, and Mary and Jesus just for a moment hold onto each other, cling to each other, a promise that we too will be held close by the Risen Christ, that these broken down bodies will one day be raised up healed and new and beautiful like his, that we too will hold our loved ones in our arms again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;Don&#8217;t hold on,&#8220; Jesus says, &#8222;but Go and tell my brothers that I am risen and am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.&#8220; So Mary went, Mary ran with all her might to go and tell\u2014\u201cI have seen the Lord!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, with the light shining in the darkness, by your readings, in the renewing of our baptisms, in our singing, and now in the Holy Communion, tonight in so many words we&#8217;ve said the same: &#8222;I have seen the Lord.&#8220;\u00a0 You have seen the Lord. You&#8217;ve seen what he&#8217;s done.\u00a0 Seen how he&#8217;s kept his promises.\u00a0 Seen his light rising in the darkness. Seen his victory over your every grief and burden.\u00a0 And in a moment, as you hold him in the bread and wine, as he holds onto you, then he will send you and me too.\u00a0 Sends you running out to your life, to your family, to your work or school, to your neighborhood, filled with the promise and hope of the Resurrection, filled with the midnight Easter joy of Mary\u2019s words: \u201cI have seen the Lord!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Alleluia!\u00a0 Christ is Risen!\u00a0 <em>He is risen indeed!\u00a0 Allleluia!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Amen.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>The Rev.
