Göttinger Predigten im Internet (GPI)
"The GPI is not only a source of inspiration, but through its archive it also documents a piece of contemporary and homiletical history. It invites dreaming, lingering, and reflection — pastors, students, literary figures, and all those who enjoy engaging with the thoughts of others. I like the idea that anyone, at any time and from anywhere, can access the GPI and this rich treasury of ideas. In this way, the GPI creates a writing and thinking community that transcends national and denominational boundaries." (GPI user)
On the GPI website, current sermons are published weekly — not only in German, but also in English, Danish, and Spanish. True to its ecumenical spirit: transcending national, linguistic, and denominational boundaries. Through a user-friendly digital archive and the current sermons, a rich collection of texts is made comprehensively available, enabling theological education and continuing formation for all.
In 1997, Prof. Ulrich Nembach founded the sermon website Göttinger Predigten im Internet (GPI), a pioneering achievement for its time. In 2017, the Centre for Church Development (ZKE) took over what is the longest-running German-language sermon website, thereby securing its continued existence. Alongside this transition, the site was extensively modernised, updated, and visually redesigned for digital use.
A large part of the work for the GPI relies on the voluntary commitment of parish ministers and academically active theologians. Further tasks — such as preparing the sermons, providing regular sermon feedback, maintaining the website, and all other administrative duties — are handled by the ZKE. Currently, two students are working alongside editor Prof. Dr. Thomas Schlag to manage Göttinger Predigten im Internet. For the leadership of the ZKE, it is of great importance that students are involved in the GPI: this way, they come into contact with preaching practice at an early stage of their studies, and acquire skills not only in homiletics, but also in planning, administration, social media, and web design. In this way, the next generation of theologians is supported from an early stage.
The tasks described above involve considerable costs. Since the ZKE is funded entirely through third-party funds and donations, we depend on the support of patrons to maintain Göttinger Predigten im Internet and the associated positions. We would be delighted if you would consider supporting us!
